How to make natural kajal at home?

Making natural kajal at home is a traditional process that involves using safe, natural ingredients. Below is a step-by-step guide on how to make natural kajal at home:

Ingredients:

1. Almonds (or ghee) - 2 to 3 almonds or 1-2 teaspoons of ghee (clarified butter)

2. Castor oil or ghee - A few drops for mixing

3. Copper or silver plate (optional) - For preparing the kajal

4. Small earthen or metal lamp (diya)

5. Cotton wick

Equipment:

1. A clean, wide metal or ceramic plate or a copper/silver plate.

2. A small clean bowl for storing the kajal.

Steps:

1. Prepare the Lamp:

• If you are using almonds, skip to the next step. Otherwise, fill a small earthen or metal lamp with ghee and place a cotton wick in it. The lamp will provide the flame needed to produce soot.

2. Burning the Almonds (If Using Almonds):

• If you prefer using almonds, take 2-3 almonds and hold each one over a flame using a pair of tongs until it burns and produces soot. This soot will be the base of your kajal.

3. Collecting the Soot:

• Place the metal or ceramic plate above the flame at a safe distance, so it can collect the soot that forms. Make sure the plate is not too close to the flame to prevent the soot from burning away.

• Allow the lamp to burn for 15-30 minutes. The soot will gradually accumulate on the surface of the plate.

4. Scraping the Soot:

• Once enough soot has collected on the plate, carefully scrape it off using a clean spoon or knife. Collect the soot in a clean bowl.

5. Mixing the Soot:

• Add a few drops of castor oil or ghee to the soot. Mix it well to form a smooth, thick paste. The amount of oil or ghee will determine the consistency of the kajal, so add it gradually until you achieve the desired texture.

6. Storing the Kajal:

• Transfer the prepared kajal into a small, clean, airtight container. Store it in a cool, dry place.

Tips:

• Application: Use a clean fingertip or a sterile applicator to apply the kajal to your eyes or your baby’s eyes. Ensure that your hands and the applicator are clean to avoid introducing any contaminants.

• Storage: Natural kajal can last for several weeks if stored properly. Always check for any changes in smell or texture before each use.

Important Considerations:

• Hygiene: Ensure all utensils and containers used in the preparation are clean and sterile to avoid contamination.

• Safety: Test a small amount of the kajal on your skin to ensure there’s no allergic reaction before applying it to sensitive areas like the eyes.

• Use of Ingredients: Stick to natural, high-quality ingredients to ensure the safety and efficacy of the homemade kajal.

By following these steps, you can create a natural, homemade kajal that’s free from harmful chemicals, making it safer for use on both babies and adults.
