Physiology of Fracture Healing:

Inflammation Phase:

  • Immediately after a fracture, a blood clot forms, allowing inflammatory cells to reach the wound area.

  • Repair cells (osteoblasts and chondroblasts) begin differentiating and laying down new bone matrix and cartilage.

  • Osteoclast cells dissolve and recycle bone debris.

Reparative Phase:

  • About two weeks after the fracture, proteins produced by osteoblasts and chondroblasts consolidate into a soft callus.

  • Over 6 to 12 weeks, this soft callus hardens into a strong callus as the bone weaves together.

Remodeling Phase:

  • The callus matures and remodels itself into stronger lamellar bone.

  • Osteoblasts and osteoclasts work together to transform woven bone into mature bone tissue.
