Tooth pain can be very unpleasant and interfere with your daily life. It can be a sign that something is wrong with your teeth or gums, such as a cavity, an infection, a crack, or a disease. It can also be caused by other things, such as a sinus problem, an injury, or stress. Tooth pain can vary from mild to severe, and it can affect your mood and your sleep.

If you have tooth pain, you should visit your dentist as soon as you can to find out and treat the root cause. However, if you can’t see your dentist right away, or if you want to ease your pain for a while, you can try some natural home remedies that may help. These remedies are simple, safe, and effective, and they don’t need any prescription or surgery.

Here are some of the best natural home remedies for tooth pain:

  • Saltwater rinse. Saltwater is a natural way to clean your mouth and kill germs. It can also reduce swelling and loosen food bits that may be stuck in your teeth. To use this remedy, mix half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water and swish it around your mouth for a few seconds. Do this several times a day until you feel better.

  • Hydrogen peroxide rinse. Hydrogen peroxide is another natural way to disinfect your mouth and prevent infection. It can also stop bleeding and heal your gums. To use this remedy, mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide and water and swish it around your mouth for a few seconds. Don’t swallow the solution. Do this once or twice a day until you feel better.

  • Cold compress. A cold compress can help numb the pain and reduce swelling in your face. To use this remedy, wrap a bag of ice or frozen peas in a towel and press it to the outside of your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes. Do this several times a day as needed.

  • Peppermint tea bags. Peppermint has soothing and pain-relieving properties that can calm your gums and ease your pain. To use this remedy, steep a peppermint tea bag in hot water for a few minutes, then let it cool a bit. Put the tea bag on the sore tooth for 15 to 20 minutes. You can also put the tea bag in the freezer for a few minutes and use it as a cold compress.

  • Garlic. Garlic has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can fight infection and reduce pain. To use this remedy, crush a garlic clove and mix it with a little salt. Put the paste on the sore tooth and leave it for a few minutes. You can also chew a fresh garlic clove slowly to release its juice. Do this a few times a day until you feel better.

  • Vanilla extract. Vanilla extract contains alcohol and eugenol, a substance that has pain-relieving and antiseptic effects. To use this remedy, dip a cotton ball in vanilla extract and dab it on the sore tooth. You can also rub a little vanilla extract on your gums. Do this a few times a day as needed.

  • Clove. Clove is a spice that has been used for centuries to treat tooth pain. Clove contains eugenol, which is a natural anesthetic and antiseptic. To use this remedy, grind a few cloves and mix them with a little olive oil. Put the paste on the sore tooth and leave it for a few minutes. You can also use clove oil, which is more powerful, but be careful not to use too much as it can irritate your mouth. Put a few drops of clove oil on a cotton ball and place it on the sore tooth for a few minutes.

  • Guava leaves. Guava leaves have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and pain-relieving properties that can help heal your gums and reduce your pain. To use this remedy, chew a few fresh guava leaves until the juice reaches the sore tooth. You can also boil a few guava leaves in water, let it cool a bit, and use it as a mouthwash.

  • Wheatgrass. Wheatgrass is a plant that has many health benefits, including cleansing, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial effects. Wheatgrass can help fight infection, reduce inflammation, and heal your gums. To use this remedy, juice some fresh wheatgrass and use it as a mouthwash. You can also chew some wheatgrass slowly to release its juice.

  • Thyme. Thyme is an herb that has antibacterial and antioxidant properties that can help prevent infection and reduce pain. To use this remedy, mix a few drops of thyme oil with a little water and put it on the sore tooth with a cotton ball. You can also make a mouthwash by adding a few drops of thyme oil to a glass of warm water and swishing it around your mouth for a few seconds.

These natural home remedies can help you relieve your tooth pain temporarily, but they are not a replacement for professional dental care. If your tooth pain lasts for more than a day or two, or if you have other symptoms, such as fever, swelling, or pus, you should see your dentist as soon as possible. Your dentist can diagnose the cause of your pain and provide the best treatment for you.
